"Foothills Of The Figueroas"
12"x16" Oil on CanvasThis painting was started as more of a sketch to practice dialing in warm colored grasses but eventually worked it's way to a more completed painting. I also used this piece to experiment with atmosphere and depth wanting to get more of a "thickness" in the air across the valley. I didn't overly push that thickness in the air because I just wanted it to evident in the painting and not overbearing. My reference photo had a more crisp look to it since the air is so clean and clear up here so I added what's in the painting. I'm happy with the results and that's what is more important than the actual capturing of what was there in the photo.

Good work! You really achieved the atmospheric haze. As a California resident, I am very familiar with that haze! I always am challenged by getting the effect of a dark green seen through a pale haze without getting a brighter green. Do you use a wash technique?

Thanks for your comments. I mixed a lighter version of green, with some grey too, for the background trees. This same mix gets darkened as I came forward. In the end I adjusted those background trees by lightly glazing over them with a light grey/green mixture. The trick is not to mix in too much color there or you will just cover up your original background colors.
My glazing colors were applied with copal painting medium. Hope that helps Dianne.
